There are many different methods to achieve the desired result, from laboriously renaming files one at a time using Windows Explorer, to bulk renaming utilities that can pull out metadata or execute powerful Perl based regular expressions. Some programs focus on simplicity and others are designed for power users. However, the renaming multiple files option is not easy to find in the context menu, unlike the regular “Rename” one. In this tutorial, we are going to show you how you can batch-rename files and also a quick method to give a unique name to each file, and maybe the easiest one is to use a dedicated app. This article needs additional citations for. (June 2013) () () Batch renaming is a form of used to multiple and folders in an automated fashion, in order to save time and reduce the amount of work involved. Some sort of is required to do this. Such software can be more or less advanced, but most have the same basic functions. Batch renaming software exists for most. Batch renaming can also be referred to as 'mass file renaming', rename 'en masse' and 'bulk renaming'. Contents • • • • • • • Common functions [ ] Most batch renamers share a basic set of functions to manipulate the filenames: • Find a string within the filename and replace it with another, or remove it. • Setting the of the letters in the filenames. • Extracting information from the files, such as tags, and putting it in the filename. • Add a number sequence (001,002,003.) to a list of files. • Use a text file as a source for new file names. Some batch rename software can do more than just renaming filenames. Features include changing the dates of files and changing the file attributes (such as the write protected attribute). Common uses [ ] There are many situations where batch renaming software can be useful. Here is a list of some common uses: • Many digital cameras store images using a base filename, such as DCSN0001 or IMG0001. Using a batch renamer the photographer can easily give the pictures meaningful names. • When files from the such as mp3 music, the files often have crude names. A batch renamer can be used to quickly change the filenames to a style that suits the person who downloaded them. • When managing large amount of files, such as a picture database, a batch renamer is more or less essential for the task of maintaining filenames without too much manual labour. • When music files onto a / or transferring the files to a, a batch renamer can be used to listen to songs in desired order. • When uploading files to a or transferring the files to an environment that does not support or non-English characters in filenames, a batch renamer can be used to substitute such characters with acceptable ones. Problems [ ] There are a few problems to take in consideration when renaming a file list. (→ means: renamed to) • Detecting that the target filename already exist. File01 → file02 (file02 already exists in file-system) • Detecting that the target filename is already used. File01 → file03 file02 → file03 (file03 is already used) • Detecting cycle renaming (Solved by a two-pass renaming). File01 → file02 (file02 already exists in file-system) file02 → file03 (file03 already exists in file-system) file03 → file01 (file01 already exists in file-system) Two-pass renaming [ ] Two-pass renaming uses a temporary filename (that doesn't exist in file-system) as shown below. (→ means: renamed to) • First pass file01 → file01_AAAAA file02 → file02_AAAAB file03 → file03_AAAAC • Second pass file01_AAAAA → file02 file02_AAAAB → file03 file03_AAAAC → file01 It solves the cycle renaming problem. If this approach is to be used care should be taken not to exceed any filename length limits during the rename, and also that the temporary names do not clash with any existing files. List of software [ ] This is a list of notable batch renaming programs in the form of a comparison table. File Renamer makes it easy to rename large number of files in in a few clicks. Have a large picture library and wished files were called something more descriptive than DSCsomething.jpg? File Renamer gets the job done without wasting hours. File Renamer values your privacy and does not send any data on the internet. It is also a native Windows 10 application and takes advantage of all the OS's features on desktop and mobile. Supported renaming operations - Changing extension - Replacing character strings by others - Inserting a character string - Moving characters - Deleting several characters - Enumeration - Case conversion (upper, lower, title and sentence case) - Regular expressions - And more Operations are not applied immediately: you'll get a preview of any changes before deciding to continue or not. You can chain multiple operations to get virtually unlimited flexibility in how to organize your files. The app works well, but has too many limitations and no undo functionality. With a bit more effort, it should one day be as powerful as desktop software like Bulk Rename Utility. It doesn't need to have all those features, but it needs to have at least the most used ones. UI could really use some work, and however is responsible for its design should put a lot of thought on USABILITY and learning curve. A good app needs to be easy to use, and design is not about aesthetics as much as it is about function and usability. I'm optimistic about this app, and I'm willing to give it five stars if it keeps getting improvements. It is apps like this that make me despise Windows 10. File Renamer Basic that I've used on Windows XP, Vista, 7 worked perfectly but does not work with Windows 10. Tried this app and it is not user friendly in the least bit. The only 5 star rating it has is from its own developer. This program may make more sense to programmers than the average user. It is in no way a quick method to rename files nor is it effective. I somehow managed to change the extension of about 300 files and it decided to label with enumeration as well causing the extension to not work. I will have to go back and change it manually as for the life of me I can't figure out how to just change the extension for all the files. I would check the help guide, but oh wait, there isn't one. I would rate this program with negative stars if given the opportunity.
